Three meteoric forces in hip hop and pop music will collide in Toronto this week for two highly anticipated summer shows on the same night.
Lady Gaga and power couple Beyoncé and Jay Z are in town Wednesday for two concerts at the exact same time, a trying circumstance that forces fans to look deep into their hearts and determine where their true allegiances lie.
Still undecided? The Star weighs the differences between the On The Run and artRave: The ARTPOP Ballconcerts.
Beyoncé and Jay Z: Rogers Centre at 8 p.m.
Lady Gaga: Air Canada Centre at 7:30 p.m.
Expected set list
Beyoncé and Jay Z: The staggering 42-song set list is a non-stop celebration of both stars’ greatest hits, including a smattering of duets and a dash of Destiny’s Child throwbacks. The pair has opened past shows with their first collaboration, “’03 Bonnie & Clyde,” followed by “Partition,” “Drunk in Love” and “Crazy in Love.” Beyoncé’s solo hits “Why Don’t You Love Me,” “Halo” and “Flawless” were included in past shows while Jay stole the mic for “99 Problems,” “Magna Carta . . . Holy Grail” and “Tom Ford.”
Lady Gaga: Gaga has brought about 20 songs to past artRave shows, most of which are plucked from her most recent album, Artpop. Fans can expect newer hits such as “Venus” and “Aura” alongside her earliest singles, “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.”
Beyoncé and Jay Z: None
Lady Gaga: Lady Starlight, a long-time friend of Gaga’s, will open the show alongside Crayon Pop, a five-member South Korean girl group known for their cheeky hit “Bar Bar Bar.”
Beyoncé and Jay Z: We’ve written about the possibility of a Drake cameo, seeing as he collaborated with Bey on “Mine” on the surprise Beyoncé album and, well, this show is on Drake’s home turf. Fanning hopes is the fact that Jay Z made a surprise guest appearance at Drake’s OVO Fest in 2010. Will Drake return the favour?
Lady Gaga: Stunts? Lady Gaga? This is the woman who shot fire out of her bra at the MMVAs in 2009. It’s anyone’s guess as to what she’ll whip out this time.
Beyoncé and Jay Z: According to StoneRollingStone, Beyoncé dons a black fishnet ninja mask with a matching bodysuit, an “insane red-sequined jumpsuit,” a bridal ensemble and black-and-white American flag gown. Meanwhile, Jay comes out in a series of sharp blazers and his signature black diamond chains.
Lady Gaga: With Lady Gaga, the rule is the wackier, the better. She has appeared in artRave shows dressed in a polka-dot blue squid outfit, a seashell bra, a toxic-green wig and a set of gold feathered wings.
