The popular Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo dominated the 20th annual South African Music Awards last night. The duo was honored with four awards at the main ceremony last night. They added those four awards to the three trophies they won at the industry awards earlier in the day to make the total seven.
The categories the duo grabbed the awards for included album of the year, duo or group of the year, best pop album, best collaboration, best selling ring-back tone, best selling full-track download and best selling mobile music download of the year.
The Sun City Superbowl hosted the 20th anniversary of the Samas and it was one of the top events to celebrate SA’s musical talent.
Top local designers, like Anel Botha, David Tlale, Khathatso Tsotetsi, Paledi Segapo and Zano Sithetho, dressed presenters and performers who stepped out in style. Zahara was crowned as the female artist of the year for Phendula, which was also announced as the best selling album of the year.
Fellow Eastern Cape songbird Zonke was appreciated for making the best African adult album, Give and Take Live. She added this award to her Best Live DVD Sama at the industry awards earlier in the day.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo was commemorated with a Sama lifetime achievement award. Also, she was given the international achievement award for four Grammy Awards and current role of global ambassador for traditional South African music.
For significantly contributing to the richness and diversity of the local music scene, Maskandi stalwart Phuzekhemisi was also honored with a Sama lifetime achievement award.
The newcomer of the year award was given to Naima Kay and male artist of the year award went to Kabomo. The award for the best rock album was grabbed by Van Coke Cartel and the award for the Best Pop Album was given to Karlien van Jaarsveld.
