HOME CROWD: Japanese fans queueing up for Sony’s PlayStation 4 video game console on Feb 21.
Six million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold in a little over four months, Sony announced on March 4.
Of the total, 370,000 machines had been sold in Japan following the console’s Feb 22 release. Prior to that, the machine’s global tally stood at 5.3 million.
Thirty games have sold a combined 13.7 million units as both digital downloads and physical discs.
Among the best sellers is Sony’s own Killzone: Shadow Fall, which accounts for 2.7 million copies.
Blockbusters Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4 and Assassin’s Creed IV also enjoyed good uptake.
On average, 2.28 games were purchased per console sold, said Sony.
For comparison, 4.2 million PlayStation 4s had been sold worldwide by the end of 2013.
At that time, Microsoft’s Xbox One had reached the 3 million mark across its 13 launch territories; Nintendo’s Wii U, available since November 2012, had reached 5.86 million units shipped to retail.
