Lupita Nyong’o talks adjusting to newfound fame: ‘I’m living a very swollen life’

The stunning Kenyan actress opens up to New York Magazine about settling into her new life in the spotlight — and some of the perks of her Oscar nomination.

The 30-year-old Kenyan stunner said she’s living a ‘swollen’ life now, after the success of ‘12 Years A Slave.’

Lupita Nyong’o is having a moment.

Though it began before her Oscar nomination for “12 Years A Slave,” the 30-year-old Kenyan beauty says the highlight of her fast-paced year was getting the academy’s highest nod.

“I had a very good cry with my best friend, and then we had a dance party, just me and him,” she told New York Magazine, in an interview for its February issue.

 

Since then, Nyong’o has been settling into life in front of the cameras — and it’s already uncomfortable.

Nyong’o described her first paparazzi encounter, saying she didn’t know who they were waiting for.

“I don’t know who they were waiting for, but they definitely chased me down, which is a startling, disturbing experience,” she said. “I did not expect it. I went into flight mode.

“I was blissfully ignorant of the magnitude of the project I was in or what it was going to mean for the world,” she said, about the acclaim for the Steve McQueen historical drama.

The ‘12 Years A Slave’ actress said she’s already gotten to meet several of her favorite celebrities — including Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The ‘12 Years A Slave’ actress said she’s already gotten to meet several of her favorite celebrities — including Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey and Leonardo DiCaprio.

But the whirlwind has just begun for Nyong’o.

In her first awards season she has already checked off meeting several celebrities — like Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep — from her bucket list. She also recently signed on as a face of Miu Miu, and completed work on “Non-Stop,” an airplane thriller starring Liam Neeson.

“There are so many highlights that are no longer highlights,” she tells the magazine. “I’m living a very swollen life.”
