In Australia we tend to think it doesn’t happen here, and the truth is it is not a common practice, but there are women in Darwin who have had personal experience of FGM. There is, for example, a growing Somali community in the NT capital and some of the women were mutilated as young girls. It is a difficult thing for women to talk about, many of them are hesistant to share their own experience so it is important for advocates to speak out against the practice of FGM.
Felicity Gerry, a Darwin based lawyer and human rights advocate, is one of the loudest voices advocating for the prevention of F-G-M. She has appeared on numerous television shows around the world and the public speaking circuit talking about things like human trafficking, on legal representation for rape victims, and writes for various publications including the Huffington Post.
